Iran (IMNA) - Araghchi emphasized on his X account that the name "Persian Gulf," like many geographical names, is deeply rooted in human history. He noted that Iran has never objected to the use of names such as the Sea of Oman, Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea, or Red Sea, clarifying that these names do not imply ownership by any nation but rather reflect a shared respect for humanity’s collective heritage.
In contrast, Araghchi stated that attempts to alter the name of the Persian Gulf are biased actions that offend all Iranians, regardless of their background or residence. He expressed hope that the circulating rumors about the Persian Gulf are merely a disinformation campaign by “forever warriors” aiming to provoke Iranians worldwide.
Araghchi also expressed confidence that former U.S. President Donald Trump recognizes that the name "Persian Gulf" is centuries old, acknowledged by cartographers and international bodies, and was used by regional leaders in official communications as recently as the 1960s.
He warned that any short-sighted moves to change the name would have no legal or geographical validity but would provoke the anger of Iranians from all walks of life and political views, both inside Iran and abroad.
