Iran Begins Major Expansion of Nuclear Power Capacity

The head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), Mohammad Eslami, has announced that Iranian scientists and experts have already started implementing a plan to triple the capacity of the country’s nuclear power plants.

Iran (IMNA) - Eslami made these remarks following a meeting with members of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission on Monday. He emphasized that one of the main commitments of the AEOI under Iran’s 7th development plan is to increase the electricity generation capacity of nuclear power plants threefold.

Eslami stated that the project is already underway, highlighting progress in the development of the second and third phases of the Bushehr nuclear power plant in southern Iran. He also pointed out that a major initiative to produce 20,000 megawatts of nuclear electricity is being pursued seriously and rapidly.

In March 2024, Eslami reported that the Bushehr nuclear power plant set a new record for annual electricity generation in the Iranian year 1402 (2023). He noted the plant’s safe, successful, and continuous operation, and stated that it generated over 7.6 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity during that period.
