Iran Condemns U.S. “Weaponization” of UN Security Council Amid Nuclear Dispute

Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, has denounced the United States for allegedly manipulating the UN Security Council (UNSC) as part of its broader campaign of economic and political pressure against Tehran.

Iran (IMNA) - Speaking at a Security Council meeting on Thursday, Iravani criticized the session, called by the U.S. and its allies, including the UK and France, to address Iran’s alleged “insufficient” cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

During the meeting, Western states accused Iran of maintaining impermissible levels of enriched uranium. Iravani countered by asserting that Washington has openly declared its intention to exploit the Security Council to intensify economic warfare against Iran. He urged UNSC members to reject such tactics and uphold international law principles.

“This is not a legitimate discussion on non-proliferation—it is a blatant political maneuver and a misuse of the Security Council to advance narrow agendas,” Iravani stated, warning that such actions undermine the Council’s credibility.

The Iranian envoy further rejected the premise of the meeting, arguing that issues raised by Western powers belong within the IAEA’s jurisdiction and had already been addressed during a recent Board of Governors session in Vienna. He accused Washington and its allies of interfering in constructive engagements between Iran and the IAEA while continuing their failed “maximum pressure” campaign initiated under former President Donald Trump.

Iravani emphasized that Iran remains one of the most scrutinized members of the IAEA and reiterated its commitment to peaceful nuclear activities. He also highlighted a religious decree by Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei banning non-conventional weapons, including nuclear arms.

The ambassador condemned Western violations of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), reminding attendees that the U.S. unilaterally withdrew from the agreement in 2018, reimposed sanctions, and pressured European allies to follow suit. Despite provocations, Iravani noted Iran’s strategic patience and adherence to JCPOA commitments before initiating legal retaliatory measures.

Reiterating Iran’s stance against coercion, Iravani declared that Tehran would not negotiate under pressure or accept threats. He called for accountability from those who abandoned their commitments and undermined diplomacy, asserting that Iran will continue defending its rights and standing firm against external pressures.
