Iran Aims to Triple Nuclear Power Capacity by 2029

Iran is moving forward with an ambitious plan to significantly boost its nuclear power generation capabilities.

Iran (IMNA) - According to Mohammad Eslami, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), the country aims to increase its nuclear electricity production by 2,000 megawatt-hours by the end of the seventh five-year development plan, which concludes in March 2029. This expansion will elevate Iran's nuclear capacity from 1,000 to 3,000 megawatt-hours.

Key to this initiative is the ongoing construction of two additional power units at the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, with Russian assistance. The first unit at Bushehr was connected to the national grid in September 2011. Additionally, Iran has resumed work on the Karun Nuclear Power Plant in Khuzestan province, a project crucial for enhancing the country's long-term energy sustainability.

These developments underscore Iran's commitment to diversifying its energy mix and reducing reliance on fossil fuels, as well as its strategic partnership with Russia in the nuclear sector.
