Iran (IMNA) - In a statement on Wednesday, spokesman Esmail Baghaei responded to earlier comments from the EU’s new foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, and her spokesperson, which criticized Iran's human rights practices and nuclear program. Baghaei asserted that accusations against Iran were misplaced, emphasizing that the real and persistent threat to global peace stems from the "apartheid and occupying Israeli regime," which he claims possesses a stockpile of weapons of mass destruction and has committed serious international crimes, including the deaths of over 60,000 innocent people in Gaza during a recent military campaign.
Baghaei also dismissed EU claims regarding Iran's alleged involvement in the Ukraine crisis, particularly accusations of supplying drones and missiles to Russia. He reiterated that Iran has no connection to the conflict and has consistently advocated for diplomatic resolutions rather than warfare.
He criticized the EU for deflecting blame for crises that have arisen from its own policies, particularly its support for Ukraine's NATO membership amid Russian opposition. Furthermore, Baghaei rejected allegations of Iranian support for terrorism, pointing out that some EU member states have hosted terrorist groups, undermining their moral authority to accuse others.
The spokesman highlighted that the EU has failed to uphold its commitments under the 2015 nuclear agreement following the United States' withdrawal in 2018. He noted that while the EU was a founding party of the deal, it has not demonstrated the necessary will to maintain it.
Baghaei characterized the EU’s approach as interference in other nations' affairs under various pretenses, including human rights issues. He called for a more realistic approach from the EU that respects international law and justice if it wishes to play a constructive role on the global stage.
