Iran (IMNA) - Khamenei emphasized that the United States is attempting to stabilize and expand its presence in Iraq, urging the Iraqi government to take decisive action against this occupation.
During their discussions, Khamenei praised al-Sudani's efforts towards enhancing prosperity and security in Iraq, stating, “The more prosperous and secure Iraq is, the better it will be for the benefit of the Islamic Republic of Iran.” He underscored the importance of unity among Iraq's diverse religions and ethnicities, calling it "very necessary and important" for national cohesion.
Khamenei specifically highlighted the significance of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Unit (PMU), also known as Hashd al-Shaabi, urging al-Sudani to reinforce this force as it is a critical component of Iraq's power structure. He remarked that effective steps should be taken to strengthen the PMU further.
In response, Prime Minister al-Sudani acknowledged the essential elements of power in Iraq, which include the people, the PMU, national unity, and religious leadership. He reiterated Iraq's commitment to supporting the Palestinian cause amid recent aggressions by Israel in Gaza and Lebanon, emphasizing solidarity with regional resistance movements.
Al-Sudani's official visit to Tehran aims to address bilateral relations and regional issues, particularly concerning the ongoing crisis in Syria. He was welcomed upon arrival by Iranian officials and later met with Khamenei at the Saadabad cultural complex.
