Iran (IMNA) - This development comes as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to return to the White House in January, following his withdrawal from the agreement during his first term in 2018.
The upcoming talks will mark the first nuclear negotiations since President Masoud Pezeshkian took office in late July. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht Ravanchi, a seasoned negotiator, will lead Iran's delegation. The discussions are expected to focus on Iran's nuclear program as well as sanctions imposed by European nations on Iranian airlines and shipping companies.
The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), signed in 2015 between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany, sought to limit Iran's nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief. However, tensions have escalated since Trump reinstated stringent sanctions after exiting the deal, prompting Iran to exceed its nuclear restrictions.
Negotiations have been stalled since August due to the U.S.'s rigid stance on sanctions removal. Iran has emphasized the need for guarantees that any agreement reached will be upheld. The EU has expressed hope for a swift resumption of diplomacy, recognizing that a resolution to the nuclear issue is urgent for regional stability.
