Iran (IMNA) - In a joint statement released early Friday, the Iranian Foreign Ministry and the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) confirmed that directives had been issued to "initiate the operation of a substantial number of advanced centrifuges of various models." This measure aims to protect Iran's national interests and address its increasing need for a civilian nuclear program, consistent with its rights under the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement.
The resolution, which passed with a vote of 19 to 3 and 12 abstentions, accused Tehran of alleged poor cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and called for a comprehensive report on Iran's nuclear activities by spring 2025. Iranian officials criticized the motion as being approved under "pressure and insistence" from Britain, France, Germany, and the United States, despite lacking support from nearly half of the IAEA's 35-member Board of Governors.
Iran's statement emphasized that the resolution undermines the positive momentum achieved during IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi's recent visit to Tehran. It accused the three European nations and the U.S. of using the nuclear issue to pursue illegitimate objectives while having a history of failing to uphold their commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
Iran's permanent representative at the United Nations office in Vienna, Mohsen Naziri Asl, expressed disappointment over the resolution, stating it disregarded "good promises" made during Grossi's visit. He noted that Iran had agreed to cap its stockpile of 60%-enriched uranium but felt this commitment was overlooked in favor of further sanctions.
Iran continues to prove that its nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes and has warned that any resolutions against its program would prompt a swift response
