Iran and Qatar Call for Enhanced Cooperation at COP29 to Combat Climate Change

Shina Ansari, head of Iran's Department of Environment, emphasized the need for decisions made at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) to effectively mitigate climate change impacts.

Iran (IMNA) - She made these remarks during a meeting with Qatari Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie, on the sidelines of the conference taking place from November 11 to 22 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Ansari highlighted that both Iran and Qatar are significantly affected by climate change, particularly by sand and dust storms (SDSs). "Climate change has already impacted several provinces and caused severe environmental issues in the country. However, addressing the consequences of climate change requires collaborative efforts of regional countries," she stated.

The discussions also touched upon the importance of the Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment (ROPME), with Ansari noting that its capabilities have been overlooked. "We expect this environmental convention among Persian Gulf states to take effect," she added.

Qatar's newly appointed ambassador to Tehran, Saad bin Abdullah Al-Mohammad Al-Sharif, expressed Qatar's readiness to collaborate with Iran on combating SDSs. He reaffirmed Qatar's commitment to environmental issues and invited Iran to share proposals for managing dust storms.

Ansari reiterated Iran’s interest in fostering environmental cooperation with its neighbors, emphasizing that regional collaboration is essential for addressing dust-related challenges. She noted that both countries' proximity and shared membership in ROPME enhance their cooperative potential.

As COP29 progresses, a key focus will be on securing climate finance and ensuring all countries can take robust climate action. Ansari pointed out that while some nations have contributed significantly to environmental degradation, others have been hindered by sanctions from accessing necessary resources to combat these issues. She stressed that Iran's participation in COP29 is crucial for advocating its rights and interests in addressing climate change challenges.
