Bushehr nuclear plant produces more than 60 billion kW/h: AEOI chief

Iran's nuclear chief claims that after almost 12 years of operation, the country's sole nuclear power plant has produced 60 billion kilowatt hours (kw/h) of total electricity.

Iran (IMNA) - Mohammad Eslami, the head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization (AEOI), said on Sunday that the country's use of oil for power generation has been reduced by 90 million barrels thanks to the energy generated at the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP).

Eslami made the declaration at a meeting with members of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of the Iranian parliament.

Authorities said that BNPP's production has hit 50 billion kw/h in late August 2022. That indicates that for the previous year, the plant has been operating at a capacity of 1.14 gigawatts (GW) per hour, which is higher than its nominal capacity of 0.915 GW and close to its maximum capacity of 1.024 GW.

It happens despite the fact that the facility has had certain technical issues as a result of international sanctions on Iran. According to AEOI officials, the facility has been depending on Iranian technicians and engineers for various refurbishment activities over the last year.

Eslami claimed that Iran wants to launch new nuclear reactors, including phases 2 and 3 of the Bushehr facility, in order to raise its nuclear power output capacity to 20 GW.

The plant has been having some technical issues as a result of sanctions on Iran, but this is the case despite it. In the last year, AEOI officials have stated that the plant has relied more and more on Iranian engineers and personnel for various overhaul initiatives.

Eslami stated that Iran aims to develop new nuclear reactors, including phases 2 and 3 of the Bushehr facility, in order to raise its nuclear power output capacity to 20 GW.

In order to grow Iran's nuclear power sector, he said that new businesses have been established and land lots have been purchased in five regions with access to oceans or major rivers.

The Iranian parliament approved laws requiring the AEOI to enhance Iran's nuclear energy producing capacity in order to meet the country's rising demand, which last summer has reached high of 73 GW.
