Raeisi: Iran opposes any geopolitical changes in Caucasus

Tehran, according to Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi, supports the territorial integrity and established boundaries of the nations in the region and vehemently opposes any geopolitical change to the area.

Iran (IMNA) - The Islamic Republic of Iran opposes any geopolitical change or the presence of Western military forces in the Caucasus because the presence of foreigners will not only fail to solve any problem, but will also cause new problems," Raeisi said in a phone call with Nikol Pashinyan, the prime minister of Armenia, on Monday.

He said, "The Islamic Republic of Iran attaches great significance and puts priority to strengthening exchanges and collaboration with the South Caucasus area in line with the neighborhood strategy and development of relations.

The Iranian president highlighted that one crucial step toward establishing peace is for Armenia and Azerbaijan to acknowledge one another's geographical integrity.

He said that the two nations' shared border could be leveraged to strengthen economic connections rather than solely as a security concern.

The Armenian prime minister informed the Iranian president of the most recent advances in the border negotiations between his country and Azerbaijan, where they would also resolve their disputes over the enclave and defrost ties.

His comments were made against the backdrop of long-standing hostilities between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the contested Nagorno-Karabakh territory on their shared border.
