Iranians never forget part played by Western countries in Saddam's use of chemical weapons during war

The Islamic Republic, which is the primary victim of chemical weapons, rejects their use outright as a grave breach of international law and a crime against humanity, according to Iran's representative to the UN.

Iran (IMNA) - Amir Saeed Iravani, Iran's permanent ambassador to the United Nations, made the statements while speaking to the UN Security Council on Monday in New York.

He went on to say that the use of chemical weapons is a danger to world peace and security.

In reference to former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein's systematic use of chemical weapons against the Iranian people during the imposed war on Iran, he stated that the Iranian people will never forget the role of certain Western countries in assisting Saddam's regime in using such weapons against the Iranian people.

Iravani stated that the UN Security Council was unable to carry out its established charter obligations to take effective action to hold culprits responsible for such horrific crimes because of the West's destructive activities and double standards.

He said that the politicization of the Chemical Weapons Convention and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) for narrow political advantage is alarming proof of the West's continued use of double standards and harmful behaviors.

The Iranian ambassador said, "Such a policy not only could lead to tensions among member states, but also weakens the legitimacy and credibility of the disarmament machinery."
