Iran announces 32% increase in wheat output from April to May

In the 37 days leading up to May 3, Iran reported a significant rise in its purchases of locally produced wheat.

Iran (IMNA) - Saeid Raad, CEO of Iran's Government Trading Corporation (GTC), said on Saturday that wheat purchases in seven regions with mild climates in southern and southeastern Iran had topped 1 million metric tons (mt) in less than a month to early April.

According to Raad, the figure has increased by 32% over the same time in 2022.

The official said that Khuzestan, in the southwest of Iran, had supplied 623,000 mt of wheat to GTC silos for the 37 days leading up to May 3. He also noted that Kerman and Fars, in the southeast and south of Iran, had boosted their output compared to April-May of the previous year.

The majority of the wheat produced in Iran is purchased under a guaranteed purchase scheme that provides farmers with a number of advantageous rates and shipping terms.

The GTC, which is a subsidiary of Iran's agricultural ministry, expects domestic wheat purchases to climb by 13% this year to 8.5 million mt.

According to FAO estimates, Iran's total wheat output reached 13 million metric tons last year, up from 10.1 million metric tons in 2021.

This comes after the GTC purchased 7.2 million mt of wheat from domestic farmers last year, while private purchasers purchased 0.3 million mt over the same period.
