Iran (IMNA) - The statement was made in a Persian-language tweet by Nour News, which is linked with the country's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), a day after Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan told reporters in London that Riyadh is ready to begin dialogue with Iran.
"Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan has indicated his willingness to hold talks with Iran once again. The five rounds of dialogues that have already taken place between the two countries have fully made clear the mutual areas of interest," read the tweet.
"Iran likewise supports the continuation of dialogue and is prepared to seek an agreement," it continued, "Progress in the course of negotiations depends on the presence of political will."
As Iranian protesters stormed the Saudi embassy in Tehran in response to the Saudi government's killing of famous Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr, the kingdom broke diplomatic ties with Iran in January 2016.
Thereafter, Saudi Arabia pursued a combative foreign policy toward the Islamic Republic, particularly under the previous US administration of Donald Trump, with whom the Saudi rulers had close connections.
The kingdom appears to have recently modified its confrontational stance, expressing willingness through diplomatic channels and third parties to mend fences with Tehran and reestablish bilateral relations.
