Millions of mourners lined the streets of Tehran on Monday as the coffin of the martyred Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, was carried toward Azadi Square during a funeral procession described by officials as the largest public gathering in Iran’s modern history.

Iran (IMNA) - Large crowds gathered across the Iranian capital as the funeral procession got underway, with participants arriving from across the country to bid farewell to the late Leader. The procession also carried the flag-draped coffins of several members of Ayatollah Khamenei’s family, who were martyred alongside him on the first day of the recent U.S.-Israeli war of aggression on February 28.

Dressed in black and beating their chests in mourning, mourners filled the streets of Tehran as the funeral convoy moved through the city. Participants waved Iranian flags, carried portraits of the martyred Leader, and chanted slogans calling for revenge for his blood and resistance against adversaries.

Organizers estimated that the funeral procession would last between 10 and 12 hours, following a 10-kilometer route through Damavand Street, Imam Hossein Square, Enqelab Street, Enqelab Square, Azadi Street, Azadi Square, and Shahid Lashgari Highway near Mehrabad Airport.

On Sunday, Grand Ayatollah Ja’afar Sobhani led funeral prayers for the martyred Leader, his son-in-law Dr. Mesbah-ul-Hoda Bagheri-Kani, his daughter-in-law Zahra Haddad-Adel, his 14-month-old granddaughter Zahra Mohammadi-Golpayegani, and his daughter Seyyedeh Boshra Hosseini-Khamenei.

According to the organizers, funeral ceremonies for Ayatollah Khamenei and his family will continue on Tuesday in the holy city of Qom, followed by farewell and funeral events on Wednesday in the Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala.

The final funeral rites are scheduled for Thursday in the northeastern Iranian city of Mashhad, where Ayatollah Khamenei will be laid to rest at the shrine of Imam Reza (AS), the eighth Shia Imam, in accordance with his will.
