Millions of Shia Muslims around the globe gathered to mark the sacred occasion of Ashura, a commemoration of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the third Shia Imam and grandson of Prophet Mohammad.
Iran (IMNA) - The ceremony honors Imam Hussein's bravery in the face of overwhelming odds as he fought for justice against the Umayyad caliph, Yazid I, in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD.
In Iran and other countries, Shia Muslims dressed in black participated in mourning rituals, including chest-beating, mass processions, and noon prayers. Votive foods were distributed to pilgrims, with hundreds of thousands flocking to Karbala to pay their respects at Imam Hussein's holy shrine.
The 10-day Muharram mourning ceremonies symbolize humanity's unwavering struggle against injustice, tyranny, and oppression, echoing Imam Hussein's courageous stance against falsehood. On the eve of Ashura, mourners also honored Abbas ibn Ali, Imam Hussein's half-brother, who was martyred while attempting to bring water to women and children in Imam Hussein's camp during the siege by enemy forces.
