Iranians across the country have begun marking the holy day of Tasu'a, a significant Shia Muslim observance that honors the martyrdom of Hazrat Abbas (AS), the loyal brother of Imam Hussein (AS), at the Battle of Karbala.
Iran (IMNA) - Tasu'a, known as the day of loyalty and resistance, is observed on the ninth day of Muharram, a significant period in Shia Islamic calendar. The day commemorates the sacrifices made by Abbas Ibn Ali, Imam Hussein's half-brother, who fought alongside his brother against the army of Yazid in 61 Hejira.
According to tradition, Tasu'a marks the last night Imam Hussein and his companions spent together before the fateful battle, with the day preceding it known as the "Eve of Ashura". Abolfazl al-Abbas, Hazrat Abbas' other name, is revered among Muslims as a symbol of loyalty and devotion to his faith.
As part of the observance, Iranians from across the country are engaging in mourning ceremonies and charity drives during the day and night preceding Tasu'a.
