The annual torch relay rite of the Najafis living in Qom, Iran, takes place every year on the 8th, 9th, and 10th nights of Muharram.
Iran (IMNA) - This traditional rite begins with a gathering of mourners at Imam Reza Mosque (AS). From there, they proceed to the shrine of Hazrat Fatima Masoumeh (AS) to express their sympathies , then they pay their respects and condolences to Karima Ahl al-Bayt (AS).
The ceremony is marked by a traditional drum and torch relay, which serves as a poignant reminder of the tragic events that occurred during the Battle of Ashura. The torches carried by the mourners symbolize the torches that set fire to the tent of Aba Abdullah al-Hussein (a.s.), while the drumming echoes the loud beats that accompanied the Yazid army's brutal attack on the tent and its inhabitants. The intense drumming is said to drown out the cries and wails of women and children, adding to the sense of sorrow and mourning.
Through this ceremony, the Najafis in Qom honor the memory of Imam Hussein and his family, who sacrificed their lives in defense of justice and righteousness. The emotional display of grief and remembrance serves as a powerful reminder of the significance of Ashura, a pivotal event in Islamic history.
