The ritual of rolling newborns in Damask roses is one of the ancient Iranian customs that is being practiced in Damghan's Amirieh county in the first spring of the baby's life.
Iran (IMNA) - The custom of rolling babies in flowers is performed for thoes who are going through the first spring of their life and is mostly carried out by mothers, aunts, uncles and grandmothers of the newborns. If the birth date of a baby coincides with the spring season and the flowers blooming time, some women go to gardens to pick Mohammadi flowers in the early morning and collect them for the ceremony while reciting Salawat which is a salutation upon the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).The phrase literary means "O Allah, let Your Blessings come upon Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) and the family of Muhamma."
After picking the Damask roses, family memebrs start to pluck the petals and scatter them on a linen. The newborns then are laid on the bed of Mohammadi flowers. During the ritual, family members of the newborns recite some poems and Salawats while pouring the petals on the babies as the symbol of purifing their bodis and soals. Following the ceremony, guests are served with tea, drinks and pastries.
