Iranian health officials urged people to observe health and safety protocols and practice social distancing during Muharram mourning rituals, as there has been a significant surge in the number of coronavirus infections, and the official death toll has now gone above 500 every day.
Iran (IMNA) - Iran gradually lifted its COVID-19 restrictions from April, but they have been re-imposed in most provinces after a sharp spike in cases. On Saturday, officials extended restrictions by a national, mandatory 5-day quarantine to slow the spread of the COVID-19 Delta variant.
Iran’s colour-coded map indicating the severity of outbreaks is once again a sea of red as most of the provinces are at the highest level of alarm. Health officials have warned that public adherence to health protocols, such as wearing face masks and observing physical distancing is essential when participating in Muharram mourning rituals. During the first 10 days of Muharram, Shiite Muslims commemorate the historic battle of Karbala, during which the grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad (PBUH) , Husayn ibn Ali (AS), was martyred.
