On April 18, 1979, the former Supreme Leader of Iran, Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini named 18 April as Iran's Army Day, during a speech to the people calling for military parades to exhibit the nation's military preparedness. Army Day was selected as a nationwide observance to call public attention to national army activities. It is a special day to pay tribute to men and women who serve Iran's armed forces.
