"The historical and cultural ties between Iran and China have been around since early times and the intention of the two countries has been to maintain the communication till today," vice chairman of the standing committee of the Shanghai Municipal People's Congress, Soong Ching-ling, said.
Saying that Isfahan is considered as a historic and important city for Shanghai, said: "Isfahan has gained a strong position in tourism industry in Iran, and the members of the elected council of Shanghai (SMPC) are eager to increase the bilateral connection with this city."
Pointing out that Shanghai is the top tourist destination in China, Soong Ching-ling added, "the Shanghai metro has been established many years ago and it's been a successful project till know; Shanghai played a significant role in Isfahan's subway project, which was a Chinese project."
Referring to the valuable handicrafts in Isfahan, Soong Ching-ling said, "in Naghsh-e Jahan Square, I found valuable industries such as miniature, Iranian turquoise and handmade carpets, all representing the grandeur of Iranian art; I hope that the craftsmen of Isfahan would attend the Shanghai Exhibition and introduce Iranian products to Chinese market."
Emphasizing that Isfahan and the industrial companies of Shanghai have had the strongest bilateral connection so far, the head of the Isfahan City Council added, "according to the decision of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Chinese citizens are allowed to travel to Iran without visa requirements; the decision increases economic exchanges and promote tourism industry."
