Iran (IMNA) _ Speaking on Wednesday, Baghaei said Iran and Oman, as the two coastal states bordering the strategic waterway, have been holding discussions over the past two months. He noted that the talks have addressed the technical, legal, security, and environmental aspects of the proposed route, with relevant Iranian authorities reviewing the details.
Baghaei described the negotiations as “professional and forward-moving,” adding that both sides have already agreed on the geographical coordinates of the proposed shipping corridor. He said that, provided no third parties interfere with the process, Iran and Oman are expected to finalize a joint statement outlining the key points and considerations agreed upon during the negotiations.
The spokesperson stressed, however, that the bilateral understanding does not mean full security has been restored in the Strait of Hormuz. He said the factors that have contributed to insecurity in the vital shipping lane remain unresolved.
According to Baghaei, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz resulted from the military attacks carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran and the security consequences that followed. He added that what Iran describes as a continuing naval blockade and other threatening actions targeting the country and its interests remain major security concerns.
Baghaei also said there are currently no plans for Iran’s foreign minister or parliament speaker to visit Pakistan or Qatar later this week. He noted that both Islamabad and Doha continue their efforts to help reduce regional tensions and that Iran remains in contact and consultation with the two countries.
