Iran-US Technical Talks Conclude with Agreement on Four Working Groups

Technical talks on implementing the Iran-US memorandum of understanding (MoU) have concluded with an agreement to establish four working groups, according to Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister and chief technical negotiator, Kazem Gharibabadi.

Iran (IMNA) - Gharibabadi said the high-level follow-up committee on the Islamabad MoU met from Sunday through the early hours of Monday, followed by technical discussions aimed at developing implementation mechanisms. The parties reached agreement on several key measures.

Under the agreement, four working groups will be formed to address sanctions termination, nuclear issues, reconstruction and economic development, and monitoring and implementation.

Future negotiations will be conducted under a high-level committee comprising Iran’s parliament speaker and foreign minister, the U.S. vice president, and the prime ministers of Pakistan and Qatar.

Gharibabadi also announced that a contact line will be established among the MoU member states to facilitate the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. In addition, a conflict prevention unit for Lebanon will be created with the participation of Pakistan and Qatar.

The heads of the four countries’ technical teams will supervise and direct the activities of the four working groups as well as the two newly established units, reporting directly to the high-level committee.

According to Gharibabadi, the U.S. side has issued a general licence authorizing the sale of Iranian oil, petrochemicals, petroleum products, and related services, which has been published on the OFAC website.

He further stated that signed agreements concerning the release of $12 billion in frozen Iranian funds, to be disbursed in two installments of $6 billion each, will enter the implementation phase immediately.
