Iran (IMNA) - In an interview with IRIB, Baghaei dismissed any “should and must” language from Western countries regarding Iran, stressing that “the Islamic Republic of Iran makes decisions based on the interests and rights of its own nation.”
Commenting on the US naval blockade, Baghaei described the measure as illegal from the outset, calling it a violation of the ceasefire and an obstruction to freedom of navigation. He emphasized that any future American move to lift the blockade would not constitute a concession, but rather the termination of an unlawful action.
“If the Americans act on lifting these threats, they are in fact merely stopping an unlawful act they should never have committed in the first place,” he said.
Baghaei also confirmed that since March 1, following the US-Israeli attack, the Strait of Hormuz has been operating under Iran’s special measures, with commercial vessels transiting the waterway only after coordinating with Iranian authorities.
He highlighted the role of the two coastal states, Iran and Oman, in determining the future management of the strategic waterway, noting that both countries have adopted a responsible approach aimed at safeguarding national interests while assuring the international community of secure maritime transit.
“Iran and Oman will establish mechanisms that guarantee both national security and the safety of global shipping,” Baghaei said.
Responding to remarks by former US President Donald Trump regarding the elimination of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile, Baghaei stated that Tehran is currently focused on ending the war and has no comment on issues related to uranium enrichment or its enriched uranium reserves.
“At this stage, our focus is on ending the war, and we have nothing to say about details related to enrichment and Iran’s enriched uranium,” he said.
Baghaei concluded by saying that the experience of the recent special circumstances cannot be overlooked and that any future arrangements developed by Iran and Oman will be designed to simultaneously protect their national security interests and ensure the safety of international maritime shipping.
