Pezeshkian: Any Hormuz Reopening Talks Hinge on Lifting of Naval Blockade

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that any discussion regarding the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz depends on the United States first removing its naval blockade, during a telephone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron.

Iran (IMNA) - Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian noted that the Islamic Republic remains suspicious of the United States due to hostile acts occurring alongside diplomatic talks, while reiterating Tehran’s willingness to settle remaining issues within the bounds of international law.

President Pezeshkian and French President Emmanuel Macron held a phone call on Wednesday evening to address regional developments, ongoing negotiations, and strategic matters, including the security of the Strait of Hormuz.

The Iranian president stated that repeated US obstruction, along with the reimposition of sanctions, had steered diplomacy away from constructive engagement and toward pressure, threats, and penalties, despite Iran’s sincere participation in talks. Iran seeks nothing beyond its lawful rights, he added.

Any meaningful negotiation, he said, requires an end to warfare and credible assurances against the repetition of hostile actions.

Regarding maritime security, President Pezeshkian said Iran has long protected peace and stability in the Strait of Hormuz, arguing that US naval operations and seizures of Iranian vessels have undermined regional trust and global commerce.

President Pezeshkian, responding to claims circulating in regional media, dismissed allegations of any Iranian military action against the United Arab Emirates. He emphasized that if Iran’s armed forces were ever to conduct a military operation, the country would openly and transparently announce its stance.

He underscored the principle of good neighborliness, asserting that regional nations should prevent their territory from being used for acts or conspiracies against Iran. He added that Iran’s defensive responses to such threats should not be misinterpreted as provocative or destabilizing.

He also urged European states to match diplomatic rhetoric with practical measures, particularly concerning sanctions relief, while welcoming any initiative that bolsters regional peace and security.

The French president, for his part, reiterated Paris’s backing for maintaining a ceasefire arrangement and stressed the necessity of reopening the Strait of Hormuz through diplomatic channels. He acknowledged that actions such as the US maritime blockade and Israeli attacks in Lebanon constitute violations of the ceasefire.

President Macron also reaffirmed Paris’s support for continued negotiations and diplomatic resolutions, including efforts related to Iran’s nuclear dossier.

He expressed readiness to assist in advancing talks, contribute to sanctions relief, and promote multilateral guarantees aimed at achieving enduring regional stability.
