Iran (IMNA) – In an interview with Mehr news agency, the minister detailed his recent trip to neighboring Turkey and his participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Ministerial Meeting in the Republic of Kyrgyzstan. He emphasized that the two neighboring states aim to strengthen their ties through broader agricultural and border collaboration.
Speaking at the Bazargan Border Crossing in Iran’s West Azerbaijan Province, which lies along the Turkish border, Nourio-Ghezeljeh said both nations have expressed interest in establishing a joint free trade zone. He stressed that the initiative has been strongly emphasized by officials from both countries.
Following meetings with officials from Turkey’s Ağrı and Iğdır provinces, the minister highlighted the importance of enhancing cross-border cooperation. He added that significant measures have been taken to strengthen ties between border regions through free trade zones, which are expected to take effect in the near future.
Trade relations between Iran and Turkey developed and expanded over the past year, particularly in the agricultural sector, Nourio-Ghezeljeh noted, adding that both sides stress the importance of making full use of existing opportunities. He also confirmed that food security was one of the main topics discussed at the meeting.
