Araghchi Says Likely to Meet Witkoff in Geneva Thursday, Stresses Diplomacy as Only Path on Nuclear Issue

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says he is likely to meet US negotiator Steve Witkoff in Geneva on Thursday, emphasizing that diplomacy remains the sole way to address concerns over Iran’s nuclear program.

Iran (IMNA) - In an interview with CBS News on Sunday, Araghchi said the Iranian negotiating team, headed by himself, is working to prepare a framework draft for a potential agreement. He added that he will likely meet with US negotiator Steve Witkoff in Geneva on Thursday to discuss the elements of a possible deal.

“If they (American side) want to find a resolution for Iran's peaceful nuclear program, the only way is diplomacy,” Araghchi said, noting that “there is still a good chance to have a diplomatic solution which is based on a win-win game. A solution is at our reach.”

He stressed that any military build-up would not help in finding a solution.

Responding to a question about whether the Iranian team would have a draft proposal within two to three days, Araghchi said, “We are still working on that....we are trying to make it something which consists of elements which can accommodate both sides' concerns.”

“When we meet, probably this Thursday in Geneva, we can work on those elements and prepare a good text and come to a fast deal. This is my understanding. I see it quite possible,” he added.

Araghchi also argued that a better deal than the 2015 nuclear agreement is possible. He underscored Iran’s right to uranium enrichment, while saying that a solution could still be achieved despite the Trump administration’s position on zero enrichment.

Reaffirming the peaceful nature of Iran’s atomic program, the lead Iranian negotiator said Tehran does not intend to give up its nuclear activities and seeks to exercise its rights within that framework.
