Iran and US Reach Initial Understanding on Guiding Principles in Geneva Talks

Iran and the United States have reached a general understanding on a series of “guiding principles” during negotiations in Geneva, forming the groundwork for drafting a potential agreement, according to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

Iran (IMNA) - Ahead of Araghchi’s televised remarks, a correspondent from IRNA News Agency in Geneva reported, citing sources close to the Iranian negotiating team, that the discussions were highly serious and that the two sides had agreed on several issues in principle.

IRNA added that talks on further details would continue following consultations by both delegations with their respective capitals.

Meanwhile, Bloomberg also reported that the two parties had agreed to hold a third round of negotiations.

Araghchi, who led the Iranian delegation, said the discussions were conducted in a constructive atmosphere, noting, “We were able to reach some agreements on some issues in principle.”

“The path has begun and can result in an agreement,” he stated, adding that meaningful progress had been made compared with the previous meeting.

He emphasized that the talks were limited strictly to nuclear-related matters and pointed out that the process would become more challenging once the drafting phase of an agreement begins.

“Both sides have positions that will require time to move closer to one another,” Araghchi said.

He concluded by noting that no date has yet been set for the next round of talks, but both sides agreed to begin working on possible draft texts as discussions continue.
