Munich Security Conference become a “Munich Circus” amid Europe’s declining global role

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has criticized the Munich Security Conference, saying the high-profile gathering has effectively turned into what he described as a “Munich Circus.”

Iran (IMNA) - In a post published on his X account on Saturday, Iran’s top diplomat expressed regret over what he called the transformation of the once serious forum when discussions focus on Iran. He wrote that it was “sad to see the usually serious Munich Security Conference turned into the ‘Munich Circus’ when it comes to Iran.”

Araghchi added that this shift, where performance is favored over meaningful substance, carries significant implications. He noted that Europe had previously played a central role in diplomatic dialogue but has now seen its influence shrink to a negligible level.

The foreign minister further stated that the conference reflects how Europe’s misguided policies have contributed to its diminishing position on the global stage. He argued that, strategically, a directionless European Union has lost its geopolitical weight in West Asia, adding that Germany in particular is leading the process of fully yielding its regional policies to Israel.

Describing Europe’s broader trajectory as bleak, Araghchi said the paralysis and irrelevance of the EU and the E3 grouping are clearly visible in the current dynamics surrounding talks over Iran’s nuclear program, underscoring what he sees as a sharp decline in Europe’s diplomatic effectiveness.
