Lavrov: Russia Closely Watching Explosive Iran-US Situation

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov says Moscow is closely following developments related to Iran, stressing that Russia cannot remain indifferent given Tehran’s status as a close partner and neighboring country.

Iran (IMNA) – In an interview with RT, Lavrov described the current situation between Iran and the United States as highly volatile, noting that while Russia is not positioning itself as a formal mediator, it continues to engage in discussions with all sides involved, including Iran, Israel, and the US.

“At present, we are not imposing ourselves as mediators to Iran, Israel, or the United States. In our contacts with them, we are simply discussing the situation,” Lavrov said. He emphasized that the tensions are dangerous not only for Iran but for the entire Middle East, calling the situation “explosive.”

The Russian top diplomat warned that the region is filled with potential flashpoints, saying there are “too many time bombs waiting to be triggered by a clumsy foot.” He added that both Iranian and Israeli officials are aware that Russia stands ready to assist in implementing any agreements that may be reached.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced on Wednesday night that talks between Iran and the United States over the nuclear issue are set to take place on Friday in Muscat, Oman.

Previous efforts have failed to yield results, as five rounds of nuclear negotiations between Tehran and Washington in 2025 ended without progress following Israel’s military aggression against Iran and subsequent US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
