Iran Achieves Renewable Energy Milestone with 3.5 GW Installed Capacity

Iran has reached a significant milestone in its renewable energy capacity, now exceeding 3.5 gigawatts (GW), thanks to extensive government support for the sector. This development follows the inauguration of approximately 0.303 GW of new solar power plants earlier today.

Iran (IMNA) - Mohsen Tarztalab, head of the Iranian Energy Ministry’s renewable energy department (SATBA), announced that an additional 0.71 GW of solar power projects have been ordered for launch across the country, many of which are situated in and around Tehran. The newly inaugurated power plants span 16 provinces, aiming to alleviate pressure on the national electricity grid during peak demand periods.

This announcement comes as Iran intensifies its efforts to increase the share of renewable energy, particularly solar power, in its overall energy mix. Recent figures reveal that, as of October, Iran had approximately 2.55 GW of installed renewable capacity, indicating a surge of nearly 40% in less than three months. Despite this growth, renewables still represent only around 4% of the nation’s total electricity generation capacity.

Projections from the Iranian Energy Ministry suggest that renewable capacity could expand up to nine times over the next three years, potentially nearing 30 GW, contingent upon successful project implementation and financing. The government has allocated around $1.5 billion in foreign-currency loans to support the nationwide expansion of solar power projects.

Additionally, Iran’s sovereign wealth fund has committed to funding payments to China for the delivery of up to 7 GW of solar panels. SATBA also recently awarded a contract to domestic manufacturers for the supply of solar inverters, a vital component for enhancing the sector's infrastructure.
