Iran's Steel Output Climbs 9.2% to 3.4M Tons in November Amid Sanctions

Iran boosted steel production by 9.2% year-on-year to 3.4 million metric tons (mt) in November, figures from the World Steel Association (worldsteel) showed in a report cited by IRIB News on Saturday, January 3, 2026.

Iran (IMNA) - Iran ramped up output to hold its spot as the world's tenth-largest steel producer, posting one of the highest monthly growth rates globally despite foreign sanctions disrupting energy supplies.

Among the top 10 producers, only India, the United States, Brazil, and Iran saw gains that month, while leader China suffered a 10.9% drop—its second straight monthly decline. Global steel output from 70 surveyed countries fell 4.6% year-on-year to 140.1 million mt in November and dipped 2% to over 1.622 billion mt for the first 11 months.

Iran's 11-month total hit 28.8 million mt, up a slight 0.1% from last year, accounting for about 62% of West Asia's production, including output from Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen. Producers faced natural gas shortages in winter and summer electricity curbs amid high household demand, alongside costs blamed on sanctions and global market pressures.
