Iran Will Not Bow to Pressure, Insists on Right to Uranium Enrichment

Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeed Iravani, has stressed that the Islamic Republic will not relinquish its right to uranium enrichment under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and will not submit to pressure or intimidation.

Iran (IMNA) - Addressing a meeting of the UN Security Council, Iravani responded to remarks by the United States representative, who claimed that Iran cannot conduct uranium enrichment on its own soil.

“With regard to the representative of the United States, we appreciate any fair and meaningful negotiations. However, insisting on a so-called zero-enrichment policy is entirely inconsistent with the rights to which Iran is entitled as a Member of the NPT,” Iravani said.

He added that such an approach shows Washington is not seeking fair negotiations, but is instead attempting to impose predetermined intentions on Iran.

The Iranian diplomat emphasized that Tehran will not bow to pressure or intimidation, nor will it allow itself to be blackmailed in the international arena.

Iran has repeatedly stated that it is not seeking nuclear weapons and that its nuclear technology is used solely for peaceful, civilian purposes. Tehran has also pointed to a fatwa issued by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution banning the possession and use of weapons of mass destruction.
