Iran’s Aftab Shargh Solar Plant to Generate 600 MW, Power 2.5 Million Homes

Iran is accelerating efforts to complete a major solar power project in its central province of Isfahan, with the Aftab Shargh power plant expected to supply electricity to nearly 2.5 million homes upon completion.

Iran (IMNA) - The semi-official Fars news agency reported on Sunday that the Aftab Shargh solar power plant is scheduled to be fully completed by March 2027, with a total generation capacity of 600 megawatts (MW).

According to the report, the facility, located in the eastern Kuhpayeh region of Isfahan province, has already begun contributing electricity to Iran’s national grid. Following the launch of its first phase in July, the plant is currently feeding 120 MW of power into the grid.

Fars added that once fully operational, the solar plant will cut Iran’s carbon dioxide emissions by around one million metric tons per year. Its total electricity output will be sufficient to meet the energy needs of nearly 10 million people, equivalent to about 2.5 million households.

The report noted that Iran’s Mobarakeh Steel Company, the largest steel producer in West Asia, has employed more than 3,000 workers in the construction of the Aftab Shargh project, which means “Sunlight of the East” in Persian.

Mobarakeh Steel Company has participated in several energy projects across Isfahan, one of Iran’s most industrialized provinces. The province has become a key part of Iran’s plan to expand its renewable electricity generation capacity by 30,000 MW over the next four years.

Isfahan currently hosts 240 MW of solar power plants and plans to add more than 470 MW of new capacity by February. Local authority estimates indicate that the province aims to reach 5,300 MW of solar capacity by 2029, accounting for nearly one-third of Iran’s total solar capacity by that time.
