Iran Urges IAEA to Stay Neutral as Tehran Warns of Policy Shift Over Possible Resolution

Iran’s foreign minister has stressed that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) must preserve its technical mandate, avoid political bias, and withstand pressure from the United States and its European partners.

Iran (IMNA) - Abbas Araghchi made the comments in a telephone conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday—the second call between the two diplomats within a week—ahead of an IAEA Board of Governors meeting where the US and the European troika (Britain, France, and Germany) are expected to propose a resolution against Iran concerning its cooperation with the agency.

Araghchi said Tehran has consistently maintained a “constructive and responsible” approach in its dealings with the IAEA. He added that Iran has introduced initiatives and held diplomatic consultations with regional states aimed at preserving peace and stability, emphasizing that this process must continue with the participation of all relevant parties.

Tehran has warned that it will carry out a “fundamental review” of its engagement with the UN nuclear watchdog if the 35-member Board of Governors adopts a new anti-Iran resolution. Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi said Sunday that he hopes the European trio will “choose rationality” and refrain from formally submitting the draft, but noted that if they proceed, Iran will reassess its policies.

Following the June attacks by Israel and the United States on Iranian nuclear facilities, Iran suspended its cooperation with the agency under a law passed by Parliament. Iranian officials say the IAEA effectively provided cover for the strikes by accusing Iran of violating its non-proliferation commitments shortly before the bombardment and failing to condemn the assault.

For his part, Lavrov welcomed the development of a framework for regional cooperation and affirmed Russia’s readiness to continue close coordination with Iran. He highlighted Moscow’s efforts in the United Nations to uphold the principles of the UN Charter. On Palestine, Lavrov reiterated Russia’s support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and rejected any action that would undermine their rights.
