Iran (IMNA) - Speaking on Saturday ahead of the Board of Governors (BoG) meeting scheduled for November 19–21 in Vienna, Najafi emphasized that the United States, along with Britain, France, and Germany — known collectively as the E3 — intends to introduce a resolution targeting Iran’s cooperation with the agency.
Najafi argued that Washington and the E3 are once again attempting to manipulate international mechanisms to impose what he called unreasonable and coercive positions on the Iranian nation. He said efforts to pressure IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi into basing reports on expired UN Security Council resolutions are both unlawful and unjustified, warning that such actions would further complicate matters and harm diplomatic efforts.
He stressed that the US-E3 push is unlikely to affect Iran’s current safeguards implementation, which has already been impacted by the 12-day US-Israeli war of aggression against the Islamic Republic in June.
Najafi called on all BoG member states to oppose what he described as harmful unilateral measures by the US and its European allies. He also reaffirmed Iran’s right to take necessary actions in response to any unlawful or unwarranted steps.
On June 25, one day after Iran’s retaliatory strikes ended the 12-day US-Israeli assault, Iran’s parliament voted to suspend all cooperation with the IAEA. Lawmakers argued that agency resolutions — particularly the Board of Governors’ June 12 directive — had paved the way for Israeli attacks.
Although discussions with the IAEA resumed in September, Tehran warned that the E3’s activation of the UN snapback mechanism following the Cairo agreement imposed “new conditions” that effectively nullified the existing framework.
The agency, however, has avoided criticizing the E3’s move and has instead continued urging Iran to meet its safeguards obligations under all circumstances.
