Iran Warns Against Political Exploitation of UN Security Council

Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations has cautioned that the UN Charter is facing a serious test due to ongoing acts of aggression and the political misuse of the organization’s mechanisms.

Iran (IMNA) - Speaking on Friday (local time), Amir Saeed Iravani, Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations, said the UN Charter — the cornerstone of international law and multilateralism — is under grave threat as a result of continued aggression, impunity, and manipulation of UN bodies for political purposes. He highlighted two major issues requiring the Security Council’s urgent attention.

The first, he said, is the Israeli regime’s acts of aggression against regional countries, including Iran. Referring to the incident on June 13, 2025, Iravani stated that Israel, with direct support and participation from the United States, launched a large-scale and unprovoked attack against the Islamic Republic. The ambassador criticized the Security Council’s continued silence and inaction, warning that such failure to address blatant violations emboldens aggressors and undermines the very foundations of the UN Charter.

The second issue, Iravani continued, concerns the deliberate misuse of the Security Council’s authority by the three European parties to the JCPOA, acting under US pressure. Their attempt to trigger the so-called “snapback mechanism” under Resolution 2231 (2015) — in an effort to reinstate terminated sanctions — was, he said, unlawful, baseless, and contrary to both the letter and spirit of Resolution 2231 and the JCPOA.

He noted that this politically motivated move has been firmly rejected by many Council members, including two permanent ones, and by the wider international community — notably the 121 member states of the Non-Aligned Movement — rendering it null and void with no legal validity.

The Iranian envoy stressed that the erosion of trust in the United Nations does not arise from its principles but from the failure to uphold them fairly and sincerely.

“When aggression goes unpunished and unilateralism replaces dialogue and multilateralism, the UN Charter loses its meaning and the Security Council’s credibility is compromised,” Iravani said.

He concluded by urging UN member states to reaffirm their commitment to the Charter, genuine multilateralism, equality, mutual respect, and the rule of law. The Security Council, he emphasized, must act impartially and effectively to ensure that no state — regardless of its power — can exploit or manipulate the body for political or unilateral objectives.
