Iran Summons European Envoys Over EU’s Stance on Persian Gulf Issues

Iran’s Foreign Ministry summoned ambassadors and heads of European missions in Tehran on Tuesday to protest what it described as the European Union’s “interventionist” position regarding Persian Gulf matters.

Iran (IMNA) - According to the Foreign Ministry, the move followed what Iran called “interfering and baseless claims” contained in a joint statement issued by the foreign ministers of the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council (PGCC) and the EU. The statement reportedly voiced support for the United Arab Emirates’ “unfounded” territorial claims over Iran’s Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, and Abu Musa islands, and commented on Iran’s defense and nuclear programs.

Majid Takht Ravanchi, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs, conveyed Tehran’s “strong protest” to the European envoys. He reaffirmed Iran’s “absolute and perpetual sovereignty” over the three islands, calling them “an inseparable part of Iran’s territory.” Takht Ravanchi denounced the EU’s support for “baseless claims” by a PGCC member state as a breach of the principles of respect for national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Rejecting the EU’s remarks on Iran’s missile program, the senior diplomat described them as “a blatant interference in Iran’s internal affairs,” asserting that the country’s defense capabilities, including its missile power, are “an inherent right to self-defense” and contribute to “regional stability and security.”

Takht Ravanchi also criticized what he called the “non-compliance, inefficiency, and bad faith” of the three European parties to the 2015 nuclear deal — France, Germany, and the UK — accusing them and the EU of failing to honor their commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). He said the bloc had “abused the dispute resolution mechanism,” causing diplomatic “obstruction and deadlock.” The EU, he concluded, “should answer for its destructive conduct rather than repeating baseless and politically motivated allegations about Iran’s nuclear program.”

Earlier on Tuesday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei also dismissed the “interventionist and unfounded claims” in the PGCC-EU statement, condemning the repetition of the UAE’s assertions regarding the three Iranian islands and any interference in Iran’s defense and nuclear matters. Baghaei warned against “divisive and destructive meddling” by certain European countries in the Persian Gulf’s affairs, reiterating Iran’s “absolute sovereignty” over the islands.

“Repetition of baseless claims in political statements has no legal value and does not alter geographical or historical realities,” the spokesman stressed.
