Iran Warns Against Foreign Interference in Caspian Sea Affairs

Rear Admiral Shahram Irani, commander of Iran’s Navy, emphasized that the Caspian Sea is no place for foreign interference, asserting that the littoral states are fully capable of maintaining regional security on their own.

Iran (IMNA) - Speaking during his visit to Saint Petersburg, Russia, on Monday, where he is attending a meeting of naval commanders from the Caspian Sea states, Irani stated: “The five littoral states of the Caspian Sea have established very good relations, and this year we have come to once again review new developments and implement them in practice.”

He underlined that the Caspian Sea “is not a place where there is room for maneuvering by others,” reinforcing the position that security in the region must be managed independently by its bordering nations.

Irani highlighted the shared goal among Caspian states to maintain maritime security and foster a dynamic regional economy. He noted that the gathering in Saint Petersburg sends a clear message: the Caspian nations should determine their own course without outside influence.

During his visit, the Iranian commander is scheduled to hold talks with his counterparts from Russia, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan. The naval summit focuses on enhancing maritime security, conducting joint military exercises, and coordinating efforts to combat smuggling. These discussions build upon the framework set by the 2018 Aktau Convention, which outlined territorial waters and resource rights among Caspian states.

The Caspian Sea, valued for its estimated $3 trillion in energy reserves, remains a region of strategic importance, particularly as Iran and Russia continue to strengthen their military cooperation.
