Iran's President Labels Snapback Sanctions on Tehran as Unethical and Illegal

President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, condemning the attempt to reimpose UN sanctions on Iran through the snapback mechanism as both immoral and unlawful.

Iran (IMNA) – Pezeshkian commended Guterres for his dedication to promoting peace and recognized his firm stance on the ongoing Gaza war. However, he sharply criticized the UN Security Council for its failure to take any concrete action, stating that despite widespread atrocities and genocide in Gaza, the Council has not even issued a condemnation of the conflict.

Highlighting Iran’s compliance with its international obligations, Pezeshkian emphasized that the opposition of Russia and China to the snapback underscores the illegitimacy and unethical nature of reinstating sanctions. He expressed hope that the Secretary-General would utilize his influence to avert such measures.

In response, António Guterres detailed the UN’s efforts to urge Israel to end hostilities in Gaza, noting the tragic loss of several hundred UN staff members amid the conflict. He also conveyed optimism that a diplomatic resolution could be achieved before the snapback mechanism is triggered, thereby preventing the reimposition of sanctions on Iran.
