Araghchi Urges UN Security Council to Extend Sanctions Relief under Resolution 2231

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized that the UN Security Council must act responsibly in its meeting on Friday by extending sanctions relief on Iran.

Iran (IMNA) - "This afternoon, the UN Security Council will vote on a draft resolution to extend Resolution 2231. It is a fleeting opportunity for the Council to say 'No' to confrontation and 'Yes' to cooperation, providing time and space for diplomacy," Araghchi stated on his X account.

The Council is scheduled to discuss a draft resolution submitted by Russia and China aimed at prolonging sanctions relief for Iran. Over recent weeks, Iran has presented multiple proposals to keep diplomatic channels open, but the three European countries known as the E3 have not responded, while the United States has maintained a hostile approach through increased pressure.

In response to this deliberate escalation by the E3 and the US, Iran calls on Council members to act responsibly by voting in favor of diplomacy, justice, and adherence to international law. The E3’s activation of the snapback mechanism against Tehran is considered illegal by Iran, Russia, and China.
