Iran’s Iron, Steel Exports Rise 10% Year-on-Year in April-August to Nearly $3 Billion

Iran’s iron and steel exports have rebounded following a decline reported in the June quarter.

Iran (IMNA) - Data released by the Iranian Steel Producers Association (ISPA) on Saturday indicated that Iranian steelmakers exported approximately $2.97 billion worth of iron and steel during the five months ending August 22, marking a 10% increase compared to the same period last year.

In terms of volume, shipments grew by 30% year-on-year in the April-August period, reaching 15.732 million metric tons (mt). Earlier, in the June quarter, iron and steel exports had fallen by 4.7% to $1.602 billion compared to the previous year’s quarter.

ISPA data further revealed that Iran exported 1.446 million mt of finished steel products worth $676 million in the five months to late August, which reflects declines of 7% in volume and 12% in value versus the same period in 2024.

Exports of mild steel increased by 10% in value to $1.31 billion for the five-month period, while volume shipments rose by 25% to 3.161 million mt. Mild steel, or semi-finished steel, encompasses three types of steel ingots—billet, bloom, and slab—primarily used in constructing buildings, roads, bridges, and infrastructure.

A significant boost in raw iron exports was instrumental in the increased foreign currency earnings during July and August. ISPA reported that Iran exported 11.124 million mt of raw iron products, including sponge iron, pellets, and concentrates, over April to August, up more than 38% compared to the previous year.
