Iran (IMNA) - The inauguration ceremony on Monday was attended by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and senior officials from the transport ministry. This newly opened return leg of Section 2 extends from Shahrestanak, a mountain village separating Tehran from the Caspian Sea, to the Alborz Tunnel, the longest road tunnel in West Asia and the gateway to Section 1 of the highway.
According to the official IRNA news agency, this stretch includes 16 tunnels totaling 11.7 kilometers in length, along with 12 bridges spanning 1.35 kilometers. The road’s opening is expected to significantly reduce travel time for passengers returning from the Caspian Sea resorts to the capital.
Earlier, the south-north leg of Section 2 was launched in July 2023 with an investment of $134 million. Since 2018, following the withdrawal of Chinese and South Korean companies due to US sanctions, Iran has relied entirely on domestic investment and expertise to advance the project.
Section 1, a 32-kilometer route, was opened in January 2020, seven years after Section 4 was completed—a short segment connecting Marzanabad to Chalus in Mazandaran province.
The Mostazafan Foundation, the charitable organization overseeing the entire 121-kilometer Tehran-Shomal Highway, announced that construction of Section 3, a 54-kilometer stretch featuring 44 tunnels and 44 bridges, is expected to be completed by 2030.
