Iran (IMNA) - He highlighted that the growing unilateral measures and economic restrictions threaten global justice and stability, harming national interests and disrupting international cooperation and sustainable development.
Pezeshkian emphasized that BRICS, as a dynamic and influential alliance, has the capacity to defend national sovereignty, foster mutual respect, and resolve disputes through dialogue and multilateral cooperation. He proposed that BRICS establish a joint mechanism to support member countries facing unlawful sanctions, enabling their economies to progress without unjust political pressure.
The Iranian president criticized recent West Asia developments, citing Israeli-US aggression against Iran in June, the genocide in the Gaza Strip, killings in Lebanon and Yemen, and US pressure on Venezuela as clear signs of the global order's failure to maintain peace, justice, and security. He warned that eroding commitment to the United Nations Charter and multilateral trade principles risks increasing economic and security instability worldwide.
Pezeshkian called for a more inclusive, balanced, and effective multilateralism and urged BRICS to back strengthening the UN and international organizations to amplify the voice of developing countries. He underscored the need to stop economic sanctions being used as political tools to restore trust in multilateralism.
Furthermore, he noted that cooperation between BRICS and other Global South institutions such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) can strengthen the collective influence of developing nations.
BRICS, founded in 2009 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, with South Africa joining in 2010, has since expanded to include Iran, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, and Indonesia. Its members now represent over two-fifths of the world’s population.
