Powerful Earthquake Strikes Eastern Afghanistan, Hundreds Feared Dead

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan around midnight local time on Monday, shaking the Kunar and Nangahar provinces and causing extensive damage in several mountainous districts.

Iran (IMNA) - Hundreds of people are feared dead, with the death toll expected to rise as reports arrive from remote villages. According to Afghanistan’s Information Ministry, over 250 people have died and 500 were injured, mainly in the Nur Gal, Sawki, Watpur, Manogi, and Chapa Dara districts of Kunar province.

The United States Geological Survey reported the quake’s epicenter was 27 km east of Jalalabad city in Nangahar province, at a shallow depth of 8 km. Shortly after, a magnitude 4.5 tremor occurred near Basawul in Nangahar. The impact of the earthquake was also felt in neighboring Pakistan.
