IAEA Inspectors Return to Monitor Refueling at Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant

Inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have returned to Iran to oversee the refueling process of the Bushehr nuclear power plant, according to Behrouz Kamalvandi, spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI).

Iran (IMNA) - He explained that this move aligns with the scheduled operations of the plant and the need to supply the electricity network on time. Kamalvandi added that inspections will proceed only after Iran and the IAEA reach an agreement on a cooperation framework, which must be approved by the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), following a recent parliamentary resolution.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also confirmed the return of IAEA inspectors to monitor Bushehr’s refueling. He emphasized that this does not violate the legislation passed by the Iranian parliament after the US attacks on Iran’s major nuclear sites in June. That legislation mandated suspending cooperation with the IAEA amid accusations that its director general’s reports contained false claims about Iran’s peaceful program.

Araghchi further clarified that the inspectors’ return does not signify the finalization of any new cooperation agreement. “Any kind of cooperation [with IAEA] will be within the framework of the law of the parliament, which will serve the interests of the Iranian nation,” he said. He stressed that no final agreement on a cooperation framework has yet been approved.

Separately, IAEA chief Rafael Grossi stated earlier on Wednesday that the first group of inspectors has returned to Iran and is preparing to resume activities at the country’s nuclear facilities.
