Iranian Technicians Complete First-Ever Overhaul of BK 117 Helicopter Engine Amid Sanctions

Iranian technicians have successfully carried out a full overhaul of the BK 117 helicopter engine, marking a significant milestone in the country’s aviation industry despite ongoing international sanctions.

Iran (IMNA) - Hossein Pourfarzaneh, Iran’s civil aviation chief, announced on Monday that this local overhaul was the first of its kind in Iran, the outcome of several years of intensive and complex domestic work. The initiative arose after several countries, home to the original manufacturers, declined to cooperate and even confiscated engines sent by Iran for repairs.

“The engines are a major part of an aircraft or helicopter’s value, and the local capability to repair and manufacture its spare parts can play a significant role in the aviation economy of the country," Pourfarzaneh stated.

The BK 117, a medium-sized twin-engine helicopter, is a joint product of Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Airbus Helicopters, primarily used for emergency services. The overhaul project was conducted by Iran’s MAPNA Group, an engineering company known for managing advanced technology initiatives.

Despite restrictions that limit access to foreign aviation parts and technology, Iran has maintained its fleet through domestic capabilities and has even offered maintenance services to foreign airlines. Last year, reports surfaced that Aeroflot, Russia’s largest airline, sent a Western-made jet to Iran for repairs.

In late 2024, Iranian aviation authorities also declared that the country had mastered the technology to manufacture spare parts for Boeing and Airbus aircraft engines, further emphasizing Iran’s push to achieve greater self-reliance amid sanctions.
