Iran Ready to Assure Peaceful Nature of Nuclear Program if Sanctions Are Lifted: Ministry

Iran has expressed its readiness to take measures to assure the peaceful nature of its nuclear program, conditional upon the removal of what it describes as unfair sanctions, a ministry spokesperson said Monday.

Iran (IMNA) - Esmaeil Baghaei, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told reporters that under the terms of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Iran had already taken several voluntary steps, including limits on enrichment levels and restrictions on the use of certain nuclear machines, in exchange for sanctions relief by the United States and European countries.

“Accepting certain limitations on Iran’s nuclear program in return for sanctions relief is not new,” Baghaei said. He emphasized that Iran is willing to implement further assurance measures provided that unjust sanctions are lifted.

Baghaei also noted ongoing communications with the three European parties involved in the JCPOA. While Tehran has not ruled out another round of talks, no decision has yet been made regarding future negotiations.

Responding to the visit of the Deputy Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Baghaei said the purpose was to develop a protocol for interaction following recent attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities by Israel and the United States.

“There was no previous history of a country's peaceful nuclear facilities being attacked and damaged and then having IAEA inspectors visit them. In addition, there were security and safety concerns,” Baghaei remarked. He added that talks started last week, with another session between Iran and the IAEA anticipated in the coming days.

The recent escalation began with a 12-day aggression by the Israeli regime from June 13, targeting Iranian military, nuclear, and residential sites. On June 22, the US conducted military strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites in Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan.

In response, Iranian military forces launched powerful counterattacks. The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Aerospace Force executed 22 waves of retaliatory missile strikes against Israeli targets as part of Operation True Promise III, causing significant damage across occupied territories. Additionally, Iranian forces launched missile strikes on Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar, the largest US military base in West Asia, in retaliation against US attacks.

A ceasefire came into effect on June 24, halting the hostilities. Iran continues to maintain that peaceful engagement on nuclear issues is contingent upon the lifting of sanctions imposed by the US and its allies.
