Iran (IMNA) - When asked by a Fox News Radio host about the likelihood that the meeting would be deemed unproductive, Trump responded there was a 25% chance the talks would not be successful. “This meeting sets up like a chess game. This [first] meeting sets up a second meeting, but there is a 25% chance that this meeting will not be a successful meeting,” he explained.
Trump also mentioned that if the talks with Putin go well, he might arrange a trilateral meeting including Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. Three possible venues are under consideration, and Alaska is among the locations being considered for the trilateral discussions.
On August 8, Trump announced his intent to meet Putin on August 15 in Alaska, a plan that Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov later confirmed. The two leaders are expected to focus on options for achieving a long-term peaceful resolution to the Ukrainian crisis. Ushakov also indicated the next Putin-Trump meeting would likely be held on Russian soil.
Following his meeting with the UAE leader in the Kremlin on August 7, Putin expressed openness to meeting Zelensky but noted that conditions for such a meeting have yet to be established. “Unfortunately, we are still a long way from creating such conditions,” he added.
The Kremlin has emphasized the need for significant preparatory work before a Putin-Zelensky meeting can occur. Meanwhile, Kiev insists on holding the meeting without a clearly defined agenda. According to Ushakov, the US suggested the possibility of a trilateral summit with Putin, Zelensky, and Trump. However, Moscow declined to comment on this and called instead for concentration on the bilateral meeting between Russia and the US.
